This Caribbean island, celebrated for its pristine landscapes, vibrant cultural heritage, and unparalleled warm hospitality, provided the backdrop for a series of cherished memories that we will hold dear. To truly immerse yourself in the enchanting essence of Antigua, renting a car is an unparalleled choice. The island's manageable size facilitates easy navigation, granting you the liberty to explore at your leisure and discover its hidden gems. Driving in Antigua is an adventure in itself, featuring winding roads, occasional potholes, and breathtaking vistas that beckon you to pause for picturesque photographs at every corner. Experiencing Christmas in Antigua is nothing short of magical. We celebrated Christmas Day at Sheer Rocks, a renowned restaurant perched on a cliff with stunning views of the turquoise waters. This sophisticated locale seamlessly blends holiday merriment with Caribbean luxury, creating an unforgettable dining experience.
The multi-course menu featured beautifully prepared dishes, from fresh seafood to decadent desserts, all accompanied by breathtaking ocean views. The attentive staff and warm ambiance made it a Christmas to remember.
Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in maritime history. Walking through this beautifully preserved naval base, we could almost hear the echoes of British sailors from centuries past.
Just a brief drive from your location lies English Harbour, a vibrant destination that thrives at night with charming dining options. Visitors can indulge in an array of culinary delights, including fresh seafood and innovative Caribbean fusion cuisine, all set in a beautiful colonial atmosphere. Our Sunday visit to Shirley Heights for their renowned sunset celebration proved to be one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of our journey. From the elevated vantage point, the panoramic view resembled a stunning masterpiece as the sunset painted the sky in brilliant hues of orange, pink, and purple above English Harbour. The atmosphere was further enhanced by captivating live music, the rhythmic sounds of steel drums, and refreshing rum punch, transforming the evening into an unforgettable experience.
Antigua is renowned for its beaches, and we made it our mission to explore as many as possible.
- Darkwood Beach offered a secluded escape with its powdery sands and crystal-clear waters. If you’re lucky, you might spot sea turtles in the shallow areas near the coral reef.
- Fryers Beach was perfect for relaxation, with gentle waves and a serene ambiance. It’s an ideal spot for families and has nearby shacks serving delicious fried plantains and fresh coconuts.
- Runaway Beach had a livelier vibe, ideal for enjoying a refreshing drink while soaking up the sun.
- Pigeon Beach, nestled near English Harbour, was family-friendly and had calm waters perfect for swimming. Don’t miss the beautiful french inspired restaurant with delicious food and cocktails at the nearby Catherine’s Café.
- Dickenson Bay Beach was one of the most popular beaches we visited, with its long stretch of white sand, water sports, and vibrant beachside restaurants. This beach has 5 hotels long the coast and is the closest to St Johns so most days is rammed with tourists from the cruise ships
- Jolly Beach offered postcard-perfect scenery with its turquoise waters and palm-lined shores. It was the ideal spot to relax and watch the sun set over the horizon. Sandras beach bar was a little gem serving fantastic cocktails and a large menu for lunch.
- Turners Beach, located on the southwest coast, was serene and less crowded, perfect for a peaceful escape. The beachside restaurant here served fresh seafood that paired perfectly with the idyllic setting.
Pigs Paradise & Snorkeling at Great Bird Island
One of the most unforgettable experiences of our trip was a visit to Pigs Paradise, where we got to interact with adorable swimming pigs. The pigs were brought to the beach daily from a nearby sanctuary for their exercise, and they certainly knew how to entertain! The kids absolutely loved it and couldn’t stop laughing and feeding them milk —it was such a fun experience for the whole family.
Another highlight was a boat trip to Great Bird Island, where we had the chance to snorkel in the coral reefs. The absolute highlight was swimming alongside graceful sea turtles and eating a bbq lobster lunch sat on picnic table up to our waist in sea water whilst small fish swam beneath.

- Sheer Rocks – A must-visit for its cliffside setting, gourmet cuisine, and romantic ambiance. Ideal for special occasions.
- Rokuni A stunning pan asian inspired restuarant set in Sugar Ridge
- Catherine’s Café – Located on Pigeon Beach, this French-inspired restaurant serves delicious seafood and offers a relaxed, elegant vibe.
- Dennis Cocktail Bar & Restaurant – Perched above Ffryes Beach, this spot serves hearty Caribbean meals with stunning views of the coastline.
- Trappas – Situated in English Harbour, this lively eatery offers a mix of local and international dishes at reasonable prices.
- The Larder – Perfect for a casual lunch, this deli-style café in St. John’s serves fresh sandwiches, sushi, and smoothies.
For an authentic local experience, don’t miss the roadside food stalls and rum shops scattered around the island, where you can enjoy dishes like jerk chicken, goat curry, and conch fritters.
The sunsets in Antigua are pure magic—each one unique, with vibrant hues painting the sky in breathtaking shades of orange, pink, and gold. I could sit and watch them every evening, mesmerized by their beauty, and never, ever grow tired of the show nature puts on.
