Discovering Margaret River: Australia’s Coastal Gem
Tucked away in the southwest corner of Western Australia, the Margaret River region is where rugged coastline meets world-class wineries, laid-back surf culture, and seriously good food. Just a three-hour drive from Perth, it’s one of those places that feels effortlessly cool without trying too hard.
Coastal Beauty & Beaches
Margaret River’s coastline is nothing short of dramatic. Think turquoise waters, limestone cliffs, and endless stretches of sand.
- Surfers Point (Prevelly) – iconic waves and sunset views
- Hamelin Bay – famous for its friendly stingrays
- Injidup Natural Spa – a hidden rock pool that bubbles like a jacuzzi
Whether you're into surfing, swimming, or just watching the ocean do its thing, this stretch of Australia delivers.

My Route: Busselton → Dunsborough → Margaret River
I started the trip driving down to Busselton and headed straight onto the iconic Busselton Jetty. It stretches right out into crystal-clear water and is one of those places you just have to walk slowly and take in.
From there, I stopped at Shelter Brewing Co for food which was exceptional and a proper beer tasting paddle. This is the best way to experience it, you get a selection of smaller pours, usually a mix of lagers, pale ales, IPAs, and darker brews. Each one is completely different, some fresh and citrusy, others deeper, more bitter or smooth and malty. It turns into more of an experience than just a drink, and it’s very easy to lose track of time here.

Sweet Stop: Ice Cream Worth the Hype
No trip is complete without a stop at Simmo's Ice Creamery.
I went for the blueberry white chocolate, and honestly, it might be the best ice cream I had the whole trip. Super creamy with that perfect balance of sweet and sharp. Definitely not one to skip.

Staying in Dunsborough
We based ourselves in Dunsborough, and the sunsets alone made it worth it.
The sky lit up in soft pink tones, reflecting onto the ocean so everything turned this calm, pale blush colour. One of those moments where you just sit and watch it change.

World-Class Wineries
If wine is your thing, you’re in the right place. Margaret River produces some of Australia’s best Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Top picks include:
- Vasse Felix – the region’s founding winery
- Leeuwin Estate – wine + art + incredible long lunches
- Voyager Estate – classic elegance and tasting experiences
And for food, one standout meal was at Wise Winery Restaurant.
The setting is unreal, vineyards rolling down toward the ocean, and the food lives up to it. Highly recommend the seafood chowder, rich, comforting, and packed with flavour.
Food Scene That Punches Above Its Weight
Margaret River isn’t just about wine, it’s a full foodie destination.
- Farm-to-table restaurants
- Artisan chocolate and cheese producers
- Fresh seafood straight from the coast
Don’t skip the local markets either, you’ll find everything from organic produce to handmade goods.

Nature, Galleries & Adventure
Beyond beaches and vineyards, the region is packed with natural beauty and things to explore.
- Local art galleries dotted around the area
- Incredible cave systems like Lake Cave and Jewel Cave
- Coastal walking tracks and scenic drives
Perfect for mixing relaxation with a bit of exploring.

Laid-Back Lifestyle
What really makes Margaret River stand out is the vibe. It’s relaxed, unpretentious, and effortlessly stylish. Mornings
start with good coffee, days drift between beach, winery, and exploring, and evenings are all about sunsets and great food.
Margaret River is one of those rare destinations that genuinely has it all, natural beauty, incredible food and wine, and a pace of life that makes you actually switch off. Whether it’s a long weekend or a full escape, it’s worth the trip.
